Dario Franchitti has claimed his second championship title in the IndyCar series after a sensational win at Homestead-Miami. While his main rivals Briscoe and Dixon were racing on the limit Scotsman Franchitti saved his fuel, which brought him the race victory and championship title. Ryan Briscoe finished second, ahead of Dixon.

The race in Florida was about just three drivers really: Scott Dixon, Dario Franchitti and Ryan Briscoe. These three drivers would start from the front row and whoever would win the race at Homestead-Miami would claim the 2009 IndyCar championship title.

At the start Dario Franchitti managed to keep the lead when he started the race from pole position ahead of Dixon and Briscoe. After eight laps though team-mate Dixon managed to take the lead though, while Briscoe took the lead one lap later. Franchitti seemed unable to keep up with Dixon and Briscoe's pace but after the race Franchitti revealed he was saving fuel rather than trying to keep up with the race leaders hoping to complete the race with one pitstop less than the others.

It turned out to be the perfect strategy as Dario Franchitti overtook the Dixon and Briscoe after their final pitstops. His lap times weren't the fastest ones but while the others had to come in for extra fuel the Scotsman could finish the race almost five seconds ahead of Dixon and Briscoe. With his race win Franchitti claimed his second IndyCar championship title.

The three championship contenders dominated the race at Homestead. The entire field was a lap down on the three rivals. Tony Kanaan and Helio Castroneves finished in fourth and fifth while Hideki Mutoh finished sixth and even two laps down.

The 2010 IndyCar series season will start on the 14th of March with the first ever race for the series in Brazil.
