Outgoing Champion Scott Dixon has admitted that, prior to the championship-deciding race at Homestead on Saturday, he had feared for using up too much fuel at one time; ultimately, the thoughts would come back to haunt the New Zealander as team-mate Dario Franchitti snatched victory in the race and therefore the championship.
With defending Champion Dixon having won most oval races this year, the Target Chip Ganassi driver was regarded as favourite by many before the weekend; two fastest practice time appeared to confirm his leading pace although a stunning pole lap by Franchitti and clever strategy in the race allowed the Scot to steal the show.
"At the start of the race I didn't think it would be wise to go out and burn a lot of fuel," Dixon, who finished third, explained. "It ended being the fact and coming true - you just have to take it on the chin and come back and try again next year.
"At the end of the year, you'd think the fastest car is going to win but, several times, it hasn't. I think Briscoe and I had a pretty good race going on but we got what we got."
With a sum of 605 points to Franchitti's 616 and having led the standings ahead of the final race, Dixon eventually lost out in this season's title battle by a total of 11.
