As the final and title-deciding race weekend of 2009 arrived, the three men duelling for this year's title locked out the top of the practice timesheets on Friday in Miami. Reigning Champion and current leader Scott Dixon led the way with less than a tenth of a second between himself, Ryan Briscoe and Dario Franchitti.
As if things couldn't be close enough heading into Homestead, the results of the first practice session appear to have set the scene perfectly ahead of this year's championship finale. Ganassi's Dixon led the way from Briscoe with a best effort of 25.196 for the New Zealander, with team-mate Franchitti rounding out the top three.
'Best of the rest' was Mario Moraes as the second Penske of Helio Castroneves, a key element in assisting Briscoe to the title, made the top five. Rahal, Carpenter, Alex Lloyd, Fisher and Matos rounded out the leading ten. The Team 3G car of Jaques Lazier was the only man unable to complete a flying lap.
Second practice and qualifying is coming up later on Friday ahead of Saturday's race at Homestead
