The Target Chip Ganassi cars of Scott Dixon and Dario Franchitti moved atop the final classification of Friday at Motegi. The reigning Champion and his team-mate, closest challengers to Ryan Briscoe in the title race, controlled proceedings as the Australian's Penske completed the session in fourth.
With Briscoe having led the way in the first session earlier in the day, Dixon moved to the top with a time of 27.075 which was just 63 thousandths up on his team-mate. Danica Patrick, victor here last year, improved to third for Andretti Green, fractionally ahead of Briscoe, with Mario Moraes rounding out the top five.
The session was halted for a short time due to a moist track surface following rain, although there were no showers during the second 90-minute period of the day. Graham Rahal was sixth for NHL this time as Raphael Matos, Practice 1 leader Helio Castroneves, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Oriol Servia completed the top ten.
Qualifying takes place just an hour and a half after the conclusion of second practice.
