Reigning Champion Scott Dixon kicked off his Chicago weekend in confident fashion by leading the way in the first of two free practice sessions on Friday. The Target Chip Ganassi driver, who is now placed third in the standings, headed the timesheets from Penske contenders Ryan Briscoe and Helio Castroneves.

With only three races to go including this weekend, current title holder Dixon finds himself with a 20-point gap to his championship-leading team-mate, Dario Franchitti; New Zealander Dixon's best time on Friday was 25.163 with the Scot seventh quickest.

Behind the two Penskes was Danica Patrick, pleased to be back on an oval, in fourth ahead of Andretti Green Racing (AGR) team-mate Marco Andretti. Graham Rahal's Newman/Haas/Lanigan (NHL) machine rounded out the top six with a third AGR of Tony Kanaan eighth, behind Franchitti.

Mario Moraes' KV Racing and the NHL of Spain's Oriol Servia completed the top ten as Britons Justin Wilson and Mike Conway finished the session in 11th and 20th for Dale Coyne and Dreyer & Reinbold respectively.
