Ryan Briscoe and the Penske team led the way in qualifying for this weekend's round at the Chicagoland Speedway as the Australian scored pole position in qualifying. The championship contender will line up alongside team-mate Helio Castroneves with other title contenders Dario Franchitti third and Scott Dixon sixth.
With only three events remaining this season including this one, qualifying could not have been more crucial as Briscoe controlled proceedings on the oval with a best effort of 1:41.632. Behind Castroneves and Franchitti's Target Chip Ganassi car is the Andretti Green of Tony Kanaan as Graham Rahal completed the top five.
Reigning Champion Dixon, the third of the championship contenders in the standings, is also the third on the grid and will be hoping for a strong start from sixth. British hopefuls Dan Wheldon, Justin Wilson and Mike Conway finished 11th, 15th and 16th respectively as Jaques Lazier rounded up the grid.
