As the second consecutive Canadian round of the championship gets underway at Edmonton this weekend, Australia's Will Power has set the pace by registering the fastest lap time in Friday's first practice session. The Penske driver was over four tenths quicker than Raphael Matos with two more Penskes third and fourth.

Having driven the season's first two races and returned to the championship last time out in Toronto, Power kept us his run of strong form with a best effort of 1.02.284. Penske team-mates Ryan Briscoe and Helio Castroneves ensured a very strong start for the team as Matos slotted his Luczo Dragon car into second position.

Canadian Paul Tracy enjoyed a good session at home to round out the top five for KV Racing although compatriot Alex Tagliani was the slowest of the 23 runners in a practice period blighted by technical issues - he completed just 10 laps to wind up an inaccurate four seconds down.

British contenders Mike Conway and Justin Wilson ran in tandem with sixth and seventh places as Mario Moraes confirmed both KV cars in the top eight. Holland's Robert Doornbos was ninth, despite a spin in the dying minutes, ahead of Hideki Mutoh in the leading Andretti Green machine. There were also lurid moments for Ryan Huner-Reay's A.J. Foyt car and the Panther Racing of Englishman Dan Wheldon, who were 13th and 19th respectively.

The top ten was conspicuous, however, due to the absence of championship leaders Dario Franchitti and Scott Dixon; the Scot finished the session in 11th spot for the Target Chip Ganassi team, just a single place ahead his New Zealander team-mate.
