Power returns with top Toronto practice time

Will Power could not have been named more appropriately as the Australian returned to the IndyCar Series in fine style by setting the fastest lap time for Penske in Toronto on Friday. Behind him lies Raphael Matos for the Luczo Dragon team with championship leader Scot Dixon rounding out the top three ahead of Ryan Briscoe.

With his Penske homecoming confirmed by the team only last Friday, Will Power surprised some by stealing the top spot in practice after being seen as Helio Castroneves' replacement in the season's first two races. Having enjoyed the additional practice session for non-top ten drivers in the morning (due to having dropped to 19th place in the championship in his absence), he completed 45 laps and edged out Matos by over a tenth in a session which started late due to support race delays.

Reigning Champion Dixon was the highest placed of this year's championship contenders, albeit only 23 thousandths of a second ahead of Briscoe on the first of two Canadian race weekends, as Paul Tracy raised hopes for KV Racing in fifth spot. Compatriot Alex Tagliani, the second Canadian in the field, wound up 13th for the Conquest team.

In frequently interrupted session, Dario Franchitti was the leading British driver in seventh for the Target Chip Ganassi team although compatriot Mike Conway lost control of his Dreyer & Reinbold car to shoot down the Turn 3 escape road with Matos before ending the session completely with a trip into a tyre wall. The escape road was also used by leader Power, although Ed Carpenter experienced a strange and frustrating incident by, when attempting to avoiding Marco Andretti's out of shape Andretti Green car, he collected the wall himself.
