Antinucci takes the helm at 3G

01 July 2009

The 3G team has put into affect another driver change, with Richard Antinucci stepping into the cockpit of the car from this weekend onwards. He will be replacing Jacques Lazier at Watkins Glen, who in-turn filled the breach for Stanton Barrett at the last three races.

With Lazier's run of races ending unspectacularly with a first-lap trip into the wall at Richmond last Saturday, Antinucci - nephew of former F1 driver and 1998 Indy 500 winner Eddie Cheever - will race for the first time this season in the one-car team.

"I was very impressed with the IndyCar; it's been the fastest car I've had a full day to test in and will race in," Antinucci said after running the car on-track for a day at 'The Glen'. "My fitness isn't exactly like Scott Dixon's might be at this point because I haven't been racing - I've been training and preparing as much as I can without driving the car. The best training is driving the car, as they say."

"We noticed some things that we have to work on and he noticed some things that he needs to think about," admitted Greg Beck, team co-owner. "We should be able to be reasonably competitive there." Does Richard feel that enough mileage has been covered to be able to race without problems? "I covered about a race distance and - working with the team - we made immediate inroads and set a decent pace," the driver explained. "I'm competitive, so I always want to do better, and I left there with ideas and notes that we can pick up where we left off and hopefully gain another big chunk.

"I want to be in IndyCars as a career, I don't just want to make this one-off appearance and have a nice Sunday drive at a beautiful track. There's no way I can impress too much here; my intention is to graduate into a full-time IndyCar driver but not just a driver, a race winner and someone who contends for the championship."
