Television viewing figures for this year's Indianapolis 500 continued the annual trend of decreasing in numbers as the event, won by Brazil's Helio Castroneves for the third time, received its smallest national audience in the United States for twenty-three years.
Just 3.9 percent of American's population watched the race live in 2009, according to The Indy Star, which was 13 percent lower than last year and a huge 40 percent lower than in 2005, which featured the first appearance of female driver Danica Patrick.
In the district of Indianapolis, more viewers tuned into WRTV-6's delayed coverage on Sunday night as opposed to the live afternoon action, with approximately 25 percent of TV viewers watching the repeat. Castroneves eventually crossed the line first for Penske with 2005 winner Dan Wheldon second and Patrick third.
