Doornbos ready for qualifying

A smile is back on Robert Doornbos' face. The Indianapolis 500 and IndyCar Series rookie was back in the top 10 on the speed chart May 15, proving he and his No. 06 Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing machine have recovered from two crashes earlier in the month that prevented him from qualifying among the top 22 on May 9-10.

Doornbos was the third-fastest driver (10th overall) among the 13 vying for the final 11 starting positions in the "500." He lapped the 2.5-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway at 220.804 mph.

"I am quite happy; we found a good car," Doornbos said. "We ran in traffic and did some good lap times and were in the top 10 at the end of the day, so that's not bad."

The goal now is to claim the 23rd starting position, the highest spot remaining in the 33-car field, when Third Day Qualifying takes place May 16.

"It was our plan to forget about tomorrow and work on the race car, but to be honest (qualifying) was always in the back of my mind because we are in a strange situation," Doornbos said. "We have a fast car, but we are not qualified. You just want to make sure you are in the show, and then you start working on the race car. Obviously, tomorrow morning we have to go back a little bit to qualifying mode. I am comfortable, though."
